Diary: Liddy Dole - ain’t too proud to beg

As Dole plods onward with her longshot presidential candidacy, she has

been trying to avoid the usual pitfalls associated with Republican

politicians - namely, coming across as a member of the country club

elite.

To accomplish this, she has been sending frequent e-mails to supporters

(and non-supporters unfortunate enough to have wound up on the list)

from the campaign trail.

The appeals are designed to raise cash for what will be an expensive

endeavor. But the e-mails aren’t taking the usual ’send money now, ask

questions later’ approach. Rather, the appeals are for contributions to

defray everyday costs, such as gas for her campaign bus.

Still, given the head-start currently enjoyed by GOP frontrunner George

W. Bush, Dole’s homespun approach isn’t likely to have much of an

impact. ’Post Jesse Ventura, it’s an interesting idea,’ said one

politico. ’But considering Bush’s lead, it’s a moot point.’
