Diary: Don’t expect PR power to keep the electricity running

Our obsessive friends over at competing publications have attempted to blame the PRSA for many things, including global warming and the cancellation of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. But even the group’s most ardent critics can’t charge the PRSA with having contributed to the spate of blackouts that struck the country this summer. Or can they?

spate of blackouts that struck the country this summer. Or can they?

Chicago utility Commonwealth Edison has been taking lots of heat this

summer for power failures in Chicago’s business district and along its

trendy North Side. Everyone from Chicago Mayor Richard Daley to a group

of Congressmen have berated the utility for its alleged poor

service.

Now, however, a Chicago Tribune column has taken the utility to task for

having too many of its PR people join the PRSA.

The Trib’s Inc. column on Aug. 26 noted that seven Com Ed people had

recently joined the Chicago PRSA chapter. ’If they’d just fix the damn

company so it provides electrical power, they wouldn’t need those PR

types trying to convince us that the utility is doing the job,’ wrote

columnists Ellen Warren and Terry Armour.

’Ellen covered the Beirut civil war in the mid-’70s,’ the column

continued.

’Electricity still was more reliable there than in Chicagoland

today.’

Did the PRSA have any role in the Beirut war? We’ll let someone else

ferret that out.
