Diary: How funny, Gable has won a Woody

Tom Gable, founder of The Gable Group, recently proved what we thought was unimaginable: that PR pros can have a sense of humor.

Tom Gable, founder of The Gable Group, recently proved what we

thought was unimaginable: that PR pros can have a sense of humor.

The Society of Professional Journalists recently celebrated Gable’s

achievements as a humor columnist by awarding him a coveted ’Woody.’

When asked what his San Diego Magazine columns had to do with PR,

however, Gable refrained from flashing his award-winning wit. ’They’re

completely separate from my work,’ he said, with nary a chortle or

grin.

We beg to differ. Indeed, some of Gable’s columns - like the one

exploring the ’truth’ about free-range chickens or the one about Spam

Man (who oozes down the beach handing out fried spam cubes) - read like

PR campaigns gone astray.

Still, he admits that his PR agency has been working to include more

’natural quotes’ in its press releases. We hope this results in a trend

towards more giggles and less drivel about ’integrated synergies.’
