LONDON: Online bookseller Amazon.com, which recently lost its UK

managing and marketing directors, is seeking its first-ever UK PR

director as part of an expansion program.

Amazon.com.uk launched last October and generated an estimated dollars

13 million in sales in the first quarter of this year.

However, September has proven a difficult month for the company. Last

week, managing director Simon Murdoch departed suddenly, and the

bookseller has been facing more pressure from BOL - a Bertelsmann-backed

Internet book retailer that has upped its profile through the aggressive

use of PR.

The new PR/public affairs head will liaise with Amazon’s two UK

agencies, Joe Public Relations (consumer business) and August. One

(public affairs and manages in-house team).

PR manager Judith Catton is currently overseeing the department. ’The

person we hire will be responsible for defining and developing the

overall strategy for the UK,’ she said. ’We are seeking someone with a

lot of experience in both PR and public affairs.’

The PR director will report to Amazon’s marketing director - a position

that was vacated by Chris Ketley.
