CHICAGO: The MWW Group ’s Chicago office has retained a dollars
300,000 assignment from the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) for a
consumer education campaign about electric power deregulation.
The firm had worked with the ICC on the project last year (the PR work
is put up for bid annually), which likely helped it win the seven-firm
competition. ’I think we’ve shown that we can get publicity for them,’
said SVP and Chicago office chief Laurence Zoeller.
The deregulation procedure involves gradually allowing businesses and
residential customers pick their own electric utility provider.
MWW is planning video and audio news releases explaining the process,
and has worked on the commission’s web site.
It will continue last year’s efforts, which included putting together a
basic information package, through grassroots efforts with local
chambers of commerce. That audience is crucial to the PR effort, since
they are able to put together power-buying cooperatives of member
businesses.
Having grasped the intricacies of the deregulation process, Zoeller
hopes the assignment will lead to work with utilities in other
states.
The ICC work, however, precludes the firm from working with any utility
selling power in Illinois.
