LONDON: NatWest last week recruited the Maitland Consultancy to
work alongside Bell Pottinger Financial to fend off the Bank of
Scotland’s hostile takeover bid.
The Bank of Scotland’s dollars 36 billion bid for Natwest - its largest
competitor - was rejected, and was promptly followed by counterbids from
Abbey National and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Though Maitland declined comment, its win of the NatWest business has
been attributed to the close professional relationship between firm
chairman Angus Maitland and NatWest chairman Sir David Rowland.
The Bank of Scotland is using its incumbent agency, Brunswick, on behalf
of its NatWest bid. ’Their offer has improved the value of the financial
services sector,’ said Brunswick partner John Sunnucks.
