The companies are hoping to build an entirely new audience for corporate
multi-media communications: consumers at work.
’This is the intuitively correct way to reach a new audience at their
cubicles or on Mahogany row,’ said Medialink president Larry
The multimedia portal offers a wide range of capabilities, including
streaming audio and video, live webcasts, financial spreadsheets and
slide presentations. The site’s founders are hoping to entice the
Fortune 1000 clients of its parent companies to fund the wholesale
distribution of corporate content to over 6,000 news web sites.
Both Business Wire and Medialink have apparently gone to great lengths
to develop a proprietary database of the information needs of each of
its web clients, thereby targeting the right audience for each
The key here is that the Newstream.com content will be free to all
end-user web sites. Of course, it will obey the usual PR business model,
where the client pays the toll to get its message out.
Newstream.com managing editor Les Blatt hyped the site’s wide range of
capabilities and content. ’Online journalists will now have a wealth of
multimedia content that they may not have had before,’ he said.
Newstream.com boasts its own in-house production staff of around 50, and
is a fully operational service-oriented business.
