Discarded crutches in the Lourdes grotto As a child, I was inspired by the Grotto of St Bernadette in Lourdes, France, where hundreds of sick pilgrims go to be healed. The grotto’s ceiling used to be lined with the crutches of the cured, although they have now been removed. I believe in miracles to this day. Picture credit: stgemma.com
England’s beaches Humans have the same proportion of sodium, potassium and calcium as the ocean. We are also made up of a large percentage of water, so it’s no wonder we get drawn to it. Living in London, I crave the contrast of the sea air and the view of the horizon, and find myself visiting the ocean increasingly frequently. England has beautiful beaches. One of my favourites is Walberswick in Suffolk, where my sister has a home. It is magical, especially at sunset. I also love the beaches of Cornwall, particularly Porthcurno, which is near my boyfriend’s home town of Penzance. I have two beautiful photographs of those beaches that I look at every day. Funnily enough, I think of the calming sea whenever I feel stage fright.
La Ghirlandata by Dante Gabriel Rossetti I have always loved Pre-Raphaelite art and poetry. I like the reformation of intense colours and detailed compositions that the artists were trying to achieve. I’m a big romantic and fan of anything classical and dramatic. I was fortunate to see this painting. I could get lost in it; the painting is so vivid, it lights my imagination.
Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada It’s simply breathtaking. I hold this image in my mind whenever I meditate. It is one of the most beautiful places I have visited.
Misty Copeland She is an award-winning dancer and soloist with the American Ballet Theatre. She defied all the odds by becoming one of the first African-American ballet dancers to have achieved this position. Not only that, but she came into ballet late and quickly rose to the top. What is even more inspiring is that Misty does not have the typical ballerina’s stick-thin physique.
