Wikimedia Foundation threatens legal action against Wiki-PR

The Wikipedia Foundation (WMF) has threatened legal action against Wiki-PR as the war over editing Wikimedia entries heats up.

Wikimedia Foundation threatens legal action against Wiki-PR

A letter sent to the US-based agency, which has been accused of being paid to alter Wikipedia entries for clients, requests that Wiki-PR "cease and desist from further editing the Wikipedia website unless and until [they] have fully complied with the terms and conditions outlined by the Wikimedia community".

This follows the Wikimedia community, which consists of independent volunteers, adopting a ban on Wiki-PR and its agents editing the Wikipedia site on 25 October.

The letter alleges that Wiki-PR has continued to do so, stating: "Yesterday, you admitted that Wiki-PR has continued to actively market paid advocacy editing services despite the ban — consistent with evidence that we have discovered independently."

Wiki-PR CEO Jordan French said: "Wiki-PR is working with the Wikimedia foundation and its counsel to sort this out."

French has also told the Wall Street Journal that his firm counsels clients on how to adhere to Wikipedia’s rules.

"We follow those rules," he wrote, stating: "We do paid editing and not paid advocacy."
