The KTB ran a pitch, which involved five other UK agencies, as part of a global review involving 15 markets. The tender process, which has been staggered, is understood to be ongoing. Hills Balfour is not involved outside the UK & Ireland.

The board holds a pitch every three years and Hills Balfour has held the UK and Ireland account for 12 years. The UK and Ireland is Kenya’s number one market, with 15 per cent of its visitors in 2012 coming from the UK.

The KTB said in the request for proposals that it was looking to appoint destination marketing representatives in its source markets to work with it on promoting the country and act as ‘an added resource to enable KTB to optimise its marketing investments for higher value outcomes'.

Hills Balfour said it would work with Kenya to promote longstanding and developing tourism products to consumers, the travel trade and the media.

The agency will report to KTB acting director of marketing Jacinta Nzioka.
