Comms chief who cut his own job joins Brent Council

Richard Stokoe has returned to PR with a role at Brent Council after making himself redundant from London Fire Brigade earlier this year.

Stokoe has been appointed as an interim senior comms adviser at the council, which is undergoing a review of its PR team amid wider restructuring efforts.

In January, he made headlines after deleting his own fire brigade head comms post without a role to go to and calling for others in similar roles to do the same.

Stokoe, whose move was prompted by the need to make 20 per cent savings, will not be involved in Brent’s comms review.

Pointing to Barnet’s ‘easyCouncil’ tag, which refers to efforts to outsource services, as an example, he said: ‘Brent belongs in the national consciousness and the first thing to do is to help others identify the narrative of what Brent stands for, as you have with Barnet, or with Wandsworth with its low council tax.’

He added that it was not definite how long he would be in the interim position, though it could run into next year depending on the progress of the PR review and other factors.

Brent Council is currently moving to reduce the size of its senior management team as part of wider cost-cutting efforts.

In June, the council approved the extension of Christine Gilbert's appointment as interim CEO until after local elections in May 2014.
