DIARY: Party-time at the IPR as Edelman CEO becomes body's 7,000th member

The IPR was celebrating last week as it announced its 7,000th

member - the body's equivalent of a supermarket's millionth shopper.

By happy coincidence, the person to be hung on this handy news hook is

Edelman PR Worldwide UK chief executive John Mahony.

Insiders speculate that declaring Mahony as its latest recruit is more

than a coincidence, and is in fact a clever PR wheeze in itself. It

comes just days after the IPR launched a membership drive for

consultancy staff.

Meanwhile, talks appear to have broken down between the IPR and the PRCA

over plans to merge, or even to co-locate. The monthly joint meetings

continue, but IPR sources say talks floundered on the PRCA's reluctance

to lose its prized autonomy.

Edelman, of course, is a member of the PRCA, in addition to having its

head honcho swimming in IPR waters.

Gotta hedge your bets.
