DIARY: Edexcel media boss gets holiday timing right

Edexcel media chief Stevie Pattison-Dick must be a clairvoyant in

her spare time.

Last week the examining board was slaughtered by the media after a

blunder in its AS-Level maths exam. The small PR team was busy fielding

calls from reporters, and retained agency LLM's Neil Lawson was drafted

in.

What better time for Pattison-Dick to spend the week on holiday in

California: 'I was taking advantage of the cheap BA flights,' she

explained.

She praised the 'hard work' of those that remained - Lawson and head of

external relations Beryl Jeffreys and director of human resources and

external affairs Tim Williams. Pattison-Dick conceded that 'some

journalists may not have had their calls returned.'

Some newspapers told tales of tearful students without a single quote

from Edexcel. One even said 'Edexcel could not be contacted yesterday'

(The Guardian, 21 January).

Perhaps an extra pair of hands should be called in for holiday cover

next time.
