GuardianUnlimited is launching an SMS news update service for the
public affairs and politics community this week.
The mobile phone text messages will cover breaking political news as
well as a daily update of top stories from Westminster, Cardiff and
Alerts will be written by journalists from the politics team on The
Guardian's online network, and overseen by Benjamin Wegg-Prosser,
publisher of GuardianUnlimited's politics channel.
The group ran a trial of the service at 2001's Labour conference,
attracting 1,300 subscribers during the three days.
The service will also cover response to Prime Minister's questions and
updates on late evening votes.
Other GuardianUnlimited SMS services include two on football and one on
news. GuardianUnlimited is also introducing media SMS alerts, which will
be overseen by mediaguardian.co.uk editor Lisa O'Carroll.
The services cost around 25p per message.
