MEDIA: Guardian's online arm to offer SMS alerts on politics

GuardianUnlimited is launching an SMS news update service for the

public affairs and politics community this week.

The mobile phone text messages will cover breaking political news as

well as a daily update of top stories from Westminster, Cardiff and

Edinburgh.

Alerts will be written by journalists from the politics team on The

Guardian's online network, and overseen by Benjamin Wegg-Prosser,

publisher of GuardianUnlimited's politics channel.

The group ran a trial of the service at 2001's Labour conference,

attracting 1,300 subscribers during the three days.

The service will also cover response to Prime Minister's questions and

updates on late evening votes.

Other GuardianUnlimited SMS services include two on football and one on

news. GuardianUnlimited is also introducing media SMS alerts, which will

be overseen by mediaguardian.co.uk editor Lisa O'Carroll.

The services cost around 25p per message.
