After a requirement to find £100,000 of savings, a reduced team has been charged with developing a wider range of comms skills.
Fran Collingham, assistant director at the council, said the revamp included a focus on driving social media and events work: ‘We had a peer review of our comms from Nottingham, Waltham Forest and Westminster councils, and wanted to build on some of those recommendations.
‘It’s not just about saving money, but about being fit for purpose and central to this is a hub of officers who are working across press, events and marketing.’
The shake-up resulted in the loss of five PR jobs, leaving a team of 16 that includes four part-timers and an apprentice.
‘The hub is about introducing flexibility and ensuring we have people with the skills to do a wide range of tasks,’ said Collingham. ‘It’s good for their training and encouraging the development of a wider range of skills.
‘This is essential within local government, in particular when things are changing so quickly.’The overall comms set-up, including design, events and web staff, numbers 27 people.
