PUBLIC SECT0R: Sheffield council on hunt for PR chief

Sheffield City Council is to launch a search for a PR chief,

following the departure of communications head Rachel Rees.

Rees is to leave her role at the end of this month to become fundraising

and communications director at the Methodist Housing Association Care

She currently reports to chief executive Bob Kerslake and heads a team

of 76, which includes customer services, frontline tourism, marketing,

design and PR staff.

An insider said council leader Peter Moore and Kerslake have not yet

decided whether Rees' replacement will retain her responsibilities.

Marketing manager Jane Edwards will take over as head of communications

in the interim.

The council's ten-strong corporate media team, which handles internal

and external PR, is headed by corporate media manager Simon Hope, who

will report to Edwards.

Before joining the council two years ago, Rees was director of

communications for the Refugee Council.

When she arrived at the council, Rees was handed an improved budget and

tasked with overhauling communications to integrate internet, PR, design

marketing and customer relations functions. She also introduced the

council's 24-hour press office.

Work likely to be co-ordinated by her successor will include promoting

the spending of £16m of the Government's Renewal Fund money and

the spring opening of the city's Millennium Galleries complex, the

flagship of a £120m regeneration project.
