Adrian Bevington made the comments in a wide-ranging interview at Wembley this month.

His words follow former Leeds United footballer Robbie Rogers announcing that he is gay after retiring from the sport aged 25. The winger, who is from California, said he feared he would suffer discrimination if he revealed his sexuality.

However Bevington, who was not directly discussing Rogers, said that he did not feel he was being naïve in believing football ‘is ready’ for openly gay footballers.
