Discovery Networks Europe has revamped its PR department,
appointing a new director of press and PR and strengthening its in-house
The broadcaster - the operator of digital and cable channels including
Discovery Channel, Discovery Kids, and Discovery Home & Leisure - has
expanded director of consumer marketing Alanna Carty's brief to include
heading the press and PR department, and managing its £2m
The move follows the promotion of press and PR director Liz Healy to
director of communications for Discovery Networks International, based
in the US.
Following the internal changes, Carty has promoted Discovery Channel
EMEA PRO Kirsty Barr to press and PR manager, and is set to appoint a
new PRO for the Discovery Channel in the UK.
Discovery's programme information team become press co-ordinators in
order to work more closely with the broadcaster's PROs. The firm is on
the hunt for two press co-ordinators as well as a PR assistant.
The revamp follows a raft of changes to the firm's PR work following the
appointment of David Abraham as general manager in June.
MacLaurin, which was hired earlier this year on an initial six-month
brand awareness brief for the Discovery Channel, (PRWeek, 25 May), was
served notice in July as the broadcaster decided to 'focus all its
resources into one agency', according to Carty. The group then handed
the combined work to The Red Consultancy.
Red will continue to undertake consumer PR for Discovery on the
Discovery Channel and Discovery Animal Planet until the end of the year,
when the business will be reviewed.
Starfish Communications works with the broadcaster on a project basis to
promote Discovery Home and Leisure.
