BSkyB's Payne to fill publicity head job at BBC Radio 1

BBC Radio 1 has replaced Paul Simpson as head of publicity with

Julian Payne from BSkyB.

Payne joins next month after more than three years at the satellite

broadcaster. He served as senior publicist there covering entertainment

programming for Sky One and Sky Box Office.

Prior to that he worked for four years at the then Lynne Franks PR (now

part of Omnicom's Ketchum network) on consumer accounts such as Virgin

Megastores, Coca-Cola, Timberland and Mini.

At Radio 1, he will report jointly to station controller Andy Parfitt

and head of publicity for BBC Radio and Music, Sue Lynas.

Payne will run a four-strong team covering both mainstream output and

music policy as well as specialist programmes and live events.

Simpson, a former press aide to the Liberal Democrats and an adviser to

its home affairs spokesman Simon Hughes, left the BBC a month ago.

He is now head of press and PR for the Government's Children's and Young

People's Unit. Last May he took on the additional role of publicity

manager for digital channel BBC Choice.
