Flack: (saving) on expenses - Sotheby's Cafe, London W1

Reviewer: Bob Leaf, chairman, Robert S Leaf Consultants

What is it good for?

Sotheby's Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. If you go for lunch, you and your guests can view the paintings that will be auctioned in the near future. Staff are extremely capable but not imposing.

Signature dish

The menu, which changes every week, has three starters, main courses and desserts. One starter is soup and the borscht, gazpacho and cauliflower with curry oil were excellent. The main courses are meat, fish and vegetarian. Sides of heritage tomato and rocket and Parmesan salad are available. The only dish served every week is a lobster club sandwich. Even the bread is delicious, especially the olive and walnut.

Who's the boss?

Audry Cully is the manager and Laura Greenfield, who has written a cook book, is the chef.

Tips please

It is advisable to book because they are completely full most lunchtimes.

What's the damage?

Three courses work out around £35-£40.
