The Ministry of Defence is undergoing a £120,000 shake-up of
its PR team to gain better coverage in the regions.
Eight press officer posts have been created, one for each of the MOD's
geographic areas - the south-east, south-west, East Anglia, Wales,
north-east, Midlands, north-west and Scotland.
Six appointments have already been made with posts still to be filled
for the Scottish and north-west offices. The regional press officers
report to Whitehall-based director of news Martin Howard.
The appointments are part of a review started last Easter and
co-ordinated by MOD director of corporate communications, John
Howard said: 'We felt we could be doing more in the regions, which for
us in Whitehall was difficult. We needed good local experts who know
their area and know the issues. This is a major change for us.'
He added that the cost of the initiative has been kept down as all
officers will use existing MOD offices.
For example, Pat Sever, appointed as Midlands press officer, is using
Defence Estate Organisation offices in Sutton Coldfield.
