Healthcare: The Week in Healthcare - Pharma society makes hires

The Pharmaceutical Marketing Society, which promotes marketing excellence and education across life sciences, has hired independent consultant Carys Thomas Ampofo and digital specialists Loop and Layer to engage its members and extend its reach.

An ABPI survey has shown the depth of public misunderstanding over the cost and value of medicines in the UK. Thirty-five per cent thought 20 per cent or more of the NHS budget was spent on medicines, while 59 per cent thought it cost pharma companies less than £10m to develop a medicine. In reality, the NHS spent 9.7 per cent of its budget on medicines, while the cost of developing a new medicine is on average £1bn.

Axon Communications has hired Sophie Ivison as programme executive. She was formerly team co-ordinator at Weber Shandwick.

Roche's Pascal Soriot has joined AstraZeneca as its new chief executive. He has been COO of Roche's $34bn pharma division since 2010.

Hickson Communications will extend its project work with diabetes alliance Euradia to include longer-term strategy.
