Flack: (Saving) on Expenses - Al's Cafe, London SE1

Reviewer Jon Bennett, director, Linstock Communications.

What is it good for?

In these times of austerity, breakfast is the new lunch. Catch up with clients more concerned with quality work than haute cuisine over British favourites served up promptly by Al's friendly team. It is up close and personal - not the place for delicate conversations (nor delicate food) - but if you like an unpretentious, friendly environment and need to be in the office by 9am, then give it a go.

Signature dish

Dishes demonstrate value and volume in equal measure. Set aside the set breakfast options and go a la carte with a range of delicious breakfast items served in a melange of your choice. The bubble and squeak is top drawer.

Who's the boss?

The eponymous Al keeps things shipshape and treats regulars well.

Tips please

Pop in at Christmas for turkey, trimmings and six veg at £6 a plate. I kid you not. Six veg.

What's the damage?

Fivers in and you won't be able to eat for a week.
