Thomas succeeds David Meredith, who has retired from full-time
employment and will now undertake ad hoc consultancy work.
Formerly information officer at Cadw, the Welsh heritage conservation
body, Thomas assumes control of a 12 strong team. The press department
now covers an original remit of corporate work for S4C, as well as
programme publicity on behalf of the station, a duty that previously
fell to the S4C marketing department.
All press publicity and audience feedback, including a viewer hotline
for reaction to broadcasts, is handled in-house by the channel itself,
while MacLaurin is retained by S4C International, the commercial
subsidiary of the broadcaster, on a media relations brief.
Thomas admitted that in addition to the traditional challenge of
attempting to embrace a wide audience as the only Welsh language
network, the digital age posed further hurdles: 'As a channel we've
achieved a lot within a limited budget compared to others. The field has
changed dramatically since we launched 20 years ago when there were only
three other stations - now we have to compete with over 200.'
