Thus strengthens PR arm with director role for Hood

Thus, the telecommunications company that spun out of Scottish

Power, has boosted its in-house PR team with the appointment of Ian Hood

as its first communications director.

Hood is tasked with increasing the firm's media exposure.

He said: 'It was felt that more could be done to get our message out

that despite a down turn in the sector we are doing well. That is why it

was decided to create such a senior communications role.'

Hood formerly ran his own corporate communications consultancy, IHCC,

working for clients including Dell, Telewest, Sit-up TV and Thus.

He was also previously a director of corporate communications and

investor relations with Telewest from 1993 to 1999, and will report to

Thus CEO William Allan.

Hood now heads a team of four, including PR manager Deborah Rodger.

Lexis, which has handled media relations for the past two years, and

Smithfield Financial, which handles financial and investor relations,

will continue to be retained by Thus.

Hood's appointment is part of a wider senior management shake-up. This

has also seen the creation of a risk management director post, which has

been filled by David Sherrick.

Thus, which employs 2,500 staff, was floated in 1999 and was formerly

Scottish Power's Scottish Telecom unit. The utility giant still owns a

50.1 per cent stake in the firm.

Through its internet service provider Demon, Thus serves both the

business and consumer sectors in the UK and Netherlands. It also

specialises in call centre and data services to the business sector.
