Insurers group appoints PA head

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has appointed Alan Leaman

as head of media and political affairs.

This newly-created post builds on Leaman's political credentials as

press secretary to Paddy Ashdown MP and later as director of strategy

for the Liberal Democrats until 1997.

Prior to moving to ABI, Leaman was a senior associate director at Hill &


The ABI post is an enhanced position, building on the association's

previous media operations work, bringing media relations together with

PA for the first time.

Leaman said it would help the ABI to address the pressing issues facing

the UK insurance industry.

'This is an organisation that is achieving a higher profile,' he


'The agenda facing the industry is constantly broadening and it is

therefore very important that the ABI is able to get its messages across

to diverse audiences in a co-ordinated way.'

The media and political affairs department is focusing on the various

reviews of the industry being undertaken by the Government and by

agencies such as the Financial Services Authority.

The ABI aimed to bring coherence to these reviews and to ensure the

industry interacted positively and in a co-ordinated way, said


He leads a team of five and reports to the deputy director-general and

the director-general of the ABI Mary Francis, who said Leaman's

appointment will 'further strengthen our high profile in the media'.
