After criticism of Bell Pottinger and Portland for editing Wikipedia pages, the CIPR and Wikimedia UK - a charity that works on behalf of the website - have posted draft guidelines on Wikimedia for PROs editing the site.

However, Wikipedia editors have used the online forum to disparage the PR industry, while PROs have avoided it.

Wikipedia administrator 'WereSpielChequers' posted that 'Wikipedia will not accept the PR industry as a source of accurate information'.

Another administrator, John Vandenberg, wrote that engaging PR people is 'draining our resources and enthusiasm from the important parts of the encyclopedia that we would otherwise be working on'.

CIPR director of policy and comms Phil Morgan called on the industry to get more involved in the debate: 'For the guidance to be the best it can be, we need to hear from those at whom it's aimed.'
