Flack special: PRWeek's Power Book launch party

PRWeek held its annual Power Book launch party last night, which saw the industry's top dogs descend on the Met Bar to quaff champagne and reflect on each others' magnificence.

In his opening speech, PRWeek editor-in-chief Danny Rogers made a deliberate mistake before the packed room, suggesting that PRCA chief executive Francis Ingham mentioned his ‘mistress’ in his Powerbook entry. The ‘mistake’ led a horrified Ingham to shout: ‘Form mistress! Form mistress!’

Posh restaurant Nobu – above the Met Bar - saw sales go through the roof as PROs including eBay’s Vanessa Canzini, Fleishman-Hillard’s Richard Kanareck and News International’s Mary Kearney carried on the celebrations in the celeb hotspot. Conversations included shared holidays to Florida, life as a card-carrying Tory, and wearing tight Speedos. Feel free to guess which statement goes with whom…

Perhaps the only person not drinking last night was Facebook head of comms Sophy Tobias – she popped in to show her face, only ten days before going on maternity leave. That’s dedication to the networking cause…

Full-scale rumour-mongering was being practiced with aplomb by the Frank founders. Having read Graham Goodkind’s ‘most embarrassing moment’ Powerbook entry, which reads ‘when an important client complained about Andrew Bloch’s BO problem and I had to talk to him about it’, Bloch decided to start a rumour of his own – that Goodkind had walked into the party having wet himself.

Top entertainment PR man Gary Farrow had promised only a fleeting appearance due to a dinner date with legendary US songsmiths The Beach Boys. However, Farrow’s mind seemed more focused on Chelsea’s Champions League clash than Brian Wilson and co, as he left to carry on the evening with fellow celeb PR doyen Alan Edwards.

Fleishman-Hillard UK MD Richard Kanareck and Kaper founder Chris McCafferty revealed that the two have been following each other around for years – and their 'bromance' has even seen them work for each other on both sides of the client / agency relationship. However, McCafferty was quick to point out that there’s ‘nothing weird about it’.

Hope & Glory co-founder James Gordon-MacIntosh proposed a a hip-hop-themed twist on next year’s Power Book party: ‘If I’m in the book next year, I’m going to turn up in a limo and make a P Diddy style entrance. I’ll have my own stylist, make-up artist and someone carrying my drink, and get the venue to play entrance music.’ As pitches for future inclusion go, Gordon-MacIntosh's might take some beating.

Flack particularly enjoyed one in-house PR professional’s ardent desire for PRWeek to publish her feelings about her former boss: ‘He’s an utter c***, and I’ll happily go on the record and say that,’ she said, demanding that asterisks were not used. In the cold light of day Flack thought it might be wise to ignore both suggestions.

Well done to everyone who made it into the 2012 Power Book – and for those that didn't, there's always next year...
