INTERNATIONAL: Aussie govt speech brief win for Parker & Partners

CANBERRA: Parker & Partners has won the Australian government

account to write speeches on transport and regional issues.

The agency won a nine-way pitch for the two-year account after the

Department of Transport and Regional Services put its speechwriting

service out to tender earlier this year.

The brief includes writing speeches for Australia's Deputy Prime

Minister and National Party leader, John Anderson, who is also the

department's minister.

Speeches by senator Ian Macdonald, minister for regional services,

territories and local government, as well as senior department

executives are also in the brief.

Work to be carried out by the agency includes an announcement later this

summer of a memorial for the 15 people who died following an arson

attack at a backpackers hostel in Queensland in June 2000.

The incident grabbed national headlines as many of the dead were foreign

tourists. The deathtoll included six Britons.

Parker & Partners is the Australian public affairs business for Ogilvy

PR Worldwide, which took an equity stake in the public affairs

specialist in April.

MD Andrew Parker said the company's focus in Canberra helped it win the

account. 'Most of our competitors are divisions of consultancies in

Sydney or Melbourne, whereas we have a big team in Canberra, and that

closeness to the wheels of government helped,' he said.
