The BBC has appointed its first head of music online. Simon
Hopkins, who joined the development team as a consultant at the
beginning of the year, will this month oversee the second phase of
His role is to create a cross-platform multimedia environment for all of
the BBC's musical offerings, from classical to contemporary. The site
will showcase BBC music content across radio, TV and online.
Hopkins will report to Simon Nelson, controller of new media, BBC radio
Hopkins has spent most of his career in the music industry, much of it
with Virgin Records in a variety of roles.
His appointment follows that of Chris Kimber, who was made the BBC's
first head of radio online six weeks ago (PRWeek, 13 April).
