DIARY: With footie kit sponsorship in safe hands, is Adams' position in danger?

As the football season draws to a close, news reaches Diary that

Foresight Communications is to sponsor the runaway First Division

leaders.

It is worth clarifying that the league and team in question is not the

Nationwide and Fulham but the mighty Thames League, and senior civil

service side Fowlers FC.

The tie-in - initiated by Fowlers goalkeeper, Foresight MD and

ex-Downing Street private secretary Mark Adams - sees the side secure a

'multi-pound' sponsorship deal, furnishing the team with a new set of

strips vaguely similar to the Oldham Athletic away kit.

It is arguable that Adams stands to benefit most from the deal. Above

the average age but below the average height of the rest of the squad,

the ambitious goalkeeper admits that resorting to buying kit is 'the

only way (to) keep (his) place in the team', although he also concedes,

'in theory, it's a lobbying opportunity every time you step in the

shower'.

Club manager and Treasury civil servant Duncan Melville refutes concerns

that much sought-after access was on offer. He says: 'To be honest, I've

conned Adams. Now we have this sponsorship deal, I'm going to drop him

and bring in a decent keeper.'

Adams's pronouncements on his 'three-figure' financial input touch upon

this theme. He says: 'The sponsorship deal is almost certainly against

civil service rules, but what the hell. No, hold on, isn't it a

public-private partnership?'
