External communications head quits Pharmacia

Karen Tait has quit as head of external communications at drugs

company Pharmacia.

Her decision follows the completion of the merger between Pharmacia &

Upjohn and Monsanto, which created Pharmacia in March last year.

Tait, previously communications manager at Monsanto's pharmaceutical

division, Searle, has decided to take voluntary redundancy rather than

carry on with the merged company.

She said: 'I saw the option of voluntary redundancy as a good time to

leave and pursue other things. I'm considering a number of

possibilities.'

Tait had been with Searle for 17 years. She started working in sales and

marketing before switching to PR.

She added that the relocation from High Wycombe, Searle's base, to

Milton Keynes, Pharmacia's base, was another factor in her

departure.

Pharmacia is currently looking for a replacement for Tait, who leaves

next month.

She currently reports to Roy Sutherwood, Pharmacia director of public

affairs.

The head of external communications role is part of a nine-strong

communications team and deals with media relations and managing external

agency accounts.

Pharmacia is best known for producing the Nicorette anti-smoking range

of products.

Other brands in the portfolio include Zyvox, which is used in the

treatment of bacterium MRSA. It also produces cancer drugs Camptosar for

the treatment of colorectal cancer and Ellence used in the treatment of

breast cancer at an early stage

Pharmacia Corporation has 60,000 employees in 60 countries.
