EDITORIAL: Bell profits spark sale rumour

Chime Communications' announcement of a 43 per cent increase in

profits to pounds 14.3m for the last 12 months has sparked off

speculation that Tim Bell is edging his marketing services group towards

a sale.

It is a rather obvious conclusion to reach given the continued

consolidation of the market, but Bell is unlikely to surrender hold on

his empire quite yet.

He evidently views the current climate as a buyers' rather than a

sellers' market, and the plan to replicate the Chime model in the main

two PR growth markets of US and Germany, is likely to hold his interest

for the next few years at least.

And news of Interpublic's acquisition of True North is only likely to

further fuel Bell's desire to dominate industry rankings.
