Reed will look to communicate around employment issues and the Government’s efforts to reduce unemployment, led by employment minister Chris Grayling. Reed, who will report to the DWP’s head of news Stewart Todd, starts later this month.
A spokesman for the DWP said in a statement: ‘We are delighted that Jonathan will be joining us. He is a smart and highly regarded journalist, who will be a valuable asset to government as we press ahead with vital reform.’
The appointment follows the department’s recruitment of former BBC comms professional John Shield, who joined as director of strategic comms in late November. Shield previously headed comms at transport group Go-Ahead, joining in 2010 from the BBC where he was head of comms for journalism.
