The launch by PR Newswire of a web-based real-time service for
issuing price sensitive information to the Regulatory News Services may
not in itself seem that revolutionary - just another piece of
opportunism borne out of the e-revolution.
But seen in the context of the FSA's desire to break the London Stock
Exchange's monopoly on the release of that information, the move
represents some pretty fancy footwork.
At the behest of the Government, the FSA is now seriously considering
alternative methods of delivery and with the development of an RNS
linked product that could easily be developed, PR Newswire has taken
ownership of the issue.
It will no doubt now suggest that the FSA consider the Canadian route, a
happy medium between the highly restrictive British model and the very
unrestrictive American model which recently enabled the release of bogus
information about computer firm Emulex (PR Week UK, 8 September).
If, and when, the FSA proposes a Canadian-style roster of companies, PR
Newswire has manouvred itself into a prime position to offer an expanded
newswire distribution service.
