Describe your office

We have just expanded into new offices located in the heart of Brighton’s Lanes and a stone’s throw from the beach. The new ‘dog house’ combines the culture of a cool Brighton agency with the work ethic and quality of a London consultancy.

As with everything we do, everyone in the company has had the opportunity to get involved in the design of the office which combines a seaside and playful dog theme - we’re not scared of a dog pun or two.

It’s been a great deal of fun to design the space around the needs of the team, from the buzzing newsroom to inspired brainstorm areas. The open plan and non-hierarchical layout means we work closely as a team, but also have the option to utilise workspaces that suit requirements from formal
meetings through to socialising.

As well as being surrounded by shops, bars and the wide mix of Brighton entertainment, the beachside location means we can enjoy a brisk walk on the seafront, or a lunchtime swim and sunset drinks in the summer.

We are a short walk from Brighton train station (under an hour from London) and because we do a lot of our work in the City, we have two London office locations.

Staff training and appraisal programme:

Our philosophy is that a dog is for life, not just for PR and we pride ourselves on being a good employer and creating an environment where our people can grow and thrive. We promote a culture of excellence with the right processes and investment in training and development to ensure we develop pedigree PR specialists.

Our multi-talented pack of B2B PR consultants come from all walks of life with previous careers in marketing, law, engineering, consulting, market research and journalism – this is what enables us to be advisors to the advisors and what makes our internal training and development so valuable.

We call our extensive training and development programme ‘Training Cats & Dogs’ and spend nearly £7,000 a year per head on both external and internal training courses. No two training sessions are the same with locations including a country retreat, the beach and an amphitheater in Lisbon. Activities have varied from team business planning to putting on plays and writing songs.

Our induction and appraisal programme includes:

  • A one-week induction, which we tailor for employees’ specific needs / experience.
  • A line manager / mentor: including monthly informal off-site catch-ups.
  • A six monthly performance and development review (new joiners receive an additional review at 3 months).
  • An annual full 360 degree appraisal from which we update employees’ detailed Personal Training & Development Plan.

Our Personal Training & Development Plan includes a mix of generic training required for all employees to be successful in the workplace; specialist training required for specific job roles and bespoke training with one-to-one coaching required for individual development.

How do you provide a good work/life balance for staff?

By offering a London career with a Brighton lifestyle, staff have the chance to work with high profile clients in London one day and be in a brainstorm on the beach the next.

What is most important in achieving a good work / life balance is that we trust all our employees and give them the autonomy to work in a way that suits them whilst providing an excellent client service.

A balance is also achieved by carefully managing workload and resourcing to make working late or weekend working a very unusual occurrence – when this does happen we provide time in lieu.

We also offer home working, flexible working hours and give generous holiday allowance.

Describe your internships policy:

Although we don’t offer internships, we have a successful graduate scheme and offer work placements.

Our graduate scheme has a bespoke training and development progamme (see above) that includes all the elements of our standard induction, development and training programme with additional mentoring and bespoke training aimed at adapting individuals to work life.

Our work placements offer people the opportunity to do one to two weeks of work experience with us. We pay travel expenses and provide a lunch allowance. Two of our work placements have gone on to join the Man Bites Dog team.
