Shangri-La Hotels selects first PR director in Europe

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has appointed Helen Oakeley as its

first director of public relations in Europe.

The company, which runs 37 resorts and hotels in ten countries in Asia

and the Pacific, is launching a PR push in Europe for the first

time.

Oakeley will report to Julia Record, worldwide group director of PR, who

was appointed last April.

PR work in Europe was previously carried out on 'an ad hoc' basis by

European sales and marketing director, Austin Frost, according to

Oakeley.

She said: 'Even though our hotels are in the Far East it was felt more

should be done to promote ourselves in Europe.

'My initial work is to make sure people know about us and what we have

to offer,' she added.

Oakeley has no PR team but works alongside communications managers at

each of Shangri-La's hotels and resorts.

She will mainly target markets in UK, Germany and France.

Oakeley joins after working as a freelance consultant, for travel

photography company Thistle Photography and also Helen Lewis PR, where

her clients included Disney and Costa Cruises.

During her 13 years in PR she has worked for agencies ScottGold-Blyth,

BGB & Associates, as European PR manager for REZsolutions and head of

public relations for Citibank Diners Club Europe.

Shangri-La plans to double its number of hotels by 2005, including

openings in Oman, Dubai and locations in China.
