GCI hires gsk PRO Archer as its head of healthcare

GCI has taken on GlaxoSmithKline's Alan Archer as head of

healthcare.

Archer, currently gsk head of international pharmaceutical

communications, takes up the post of CEO of GCI Healthcare in UK and

Europe at the end of this month.

He is the first divisional head since the departure last August of

Catherine Warne, who left to set up medical specialist agency Red Door

Communications.

Since Warne's departure, the division, which had solely concentrated on

ethical PR, has absorbed Maureen Cropper Communications, to include

OTC.

The division has been jointly run by Maureen Cropper as MD of OTC and

Rachel Terry, MD of ethical, since September last year.

Archer heads a 30-strong team and reports to Adrian Wheeler, GCI UK's

CEO.

Wheeler said: 'We needed someone to co-ordinate both areas and so have

brought someone of Alan's experience and knowledge on board.'

One of Archer's first tasks will be to set up a specialist biotechnology

team.

Archer had been director of corporate communications with SmithKline

Beecham before it merged with GlaxoWellcome earlier this year.

He will be replaced at gsk by the promotion of Louise Sibley, currently

head of communications for consumer healthcare worldwide.

Archer is the third senior PRO at SB to leave gsk. SB corporate affairs

chief, James Hill, leaves within the next four months and Lynne Smith,

SB director and vice president of corporate communications - Europe and

international has recently accepted a redundancy package.
