Deards picked to head PA in the UK for the BT group

BT has appointed Giles Deards to the newly-created post of head of

UK public affairs.

Deards takes on the group role with responsibility for a team of three

and a remit to work with BT's PA managers across its recently-created

divisions, including BT Openworld, Ignite and Wireless.

He is also currently recruiting for a UK parliamentary affairs head to

join his team and expects to make an announcement in the next two

weeks.

He reports to group director of PA Sandy Walkington.

Deards said: 'My brief is to cover public affairs at the group level,

providing strategic and tactical public affairs advice to the business

operations.'

His role was created as a more senior version of the previous UK PA

manager post, held by Christopher Philipsbourn, who was promoted to

European PA head.

Deards joins from Alliance & Leicester, where he spent four years

heading the PA operation as external affairs manager. Former GCI

Political Counsel consultant James Grugeon replaces him in the role.

'This is a challenging lobbying role and I want to develop it a stage

further than Giles by developing the bank's brand across Whitehall and

raising awareness among politicians of the key issues facing the UK

banking sector, such as universal banking,' said Grugeon.
