BT has appointed Giles Deards to the newly-created post of head of
UK public affairs.
Deards takes on the group role with responsibility for a team of three
and a remit to work with BT's PA managers across its recently-created
divisions, including BT Openworld, Ignite and Wireless.
He is also currently recruiting for a UK parliamentary affairs head to
join his team and expects to make an announcement in the next two
He reports to group director of PA Sandy Walkington.
Deards said: 'My brief is to cover public affairs at the group level,
providing strategic and tactical public affairs advice to the business
His role was created as a more senior version of the previous UK PA
manager post, held by Christopher Philipsbourn, who was promoted to
European PA head.
Deards joins from Alliance & Leicester, where he spent four years
heading the PA operation as external affairs manager. Former GCI
Political Counsel consultant James Grugeon replaces him in the role.
'This is a challenging lobbying role and I want to develop it a stage
further than Giles by developing the bank's brand across Whitehall and
raising awareness among politicians of the key issues facing the UK
banking sector, such as universal banking,' said Grugeon.
