First comms head joins Transport for London in summer

Transport for London (TfL) has namedColin Douglas as its first

communications director.

Douglas joins in June from Sport England where he holds the same

position. Reporting to commissioner Bob Kiley, he will head a team of 25

at the TfL, Mayor Ken Livingstone's integrated transport authority for

London.

The post has been covered in the interim by Government Office for London

director Liz Meek, who was appointed last year on secondment. She left

TfL last month.

One of Douglas's priorities is to co-ordinate a communication strategy

for the commission's battle with the Government over the future of the

London Underground.

The Government wants to run the tube with a public private partnership,

however Kiley and Livingstone object to the plans, saying it will affect

safety. They prefer a unified management system.

Douglas described transport as the number one priority for London and

pledged to bring in a campaign of public liaison alongside media and

public affairs work.
