The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is set to appoint seven Liberal Democrat special advisers to create better links to departments headed by Conservative ministers.

Heriot-Watt University has backed down from plans to charge agencies to see tender documents, after the move was widely criticised. The university issued a £1.5m PR, marketing and media brief on 17 October and initially demanded that interested agencies paid £200 to see tender documents.

The BBC is making 42 comms staff redundant and is closing the print version of its 75-year-old in-house newspaper Ariel. The move is part of a major restructuring of the BBC's 191-strong comms unit, taken in response to the frozen licence fee settlement.

The British Library has promoted head of media relations Miki Lentin to the role of head of comms. Lentin joined the library in 2009, following three years as a director at Communique PR.
