Weber Shandwick corporate and public affairs director Jim Donaldson is to oversee the agency's financial comms operation.

Weber Shandwick EMEA CEO Colin Byrne stressed the agency would continue to operate Weber Shandwick Financial as a separate brand. He said: 'Corporate and financial, and indeed public affairs, share clients, so there are already synergies.' Donaldson joined in May from his role as Hill & Knowlton's EMEA corporate practice leader.

MHP Communications research has found that regulatory concerns and loss of control are the main drivers of inertia towards social media in the banking sector. Social Media - Catching Up With The Banks found 73 per cent of banks thought they were behind, but catching up, in their social media activity.

Newedge, the multi-asset brokerage and clearing company, has hired Kevin Russell as MD and global head of brand and comms. Russell was the global director of PR and strategic comms for Ernst & Young.

Comms directors in FTSE companies including BP, GlaxoSmithKline and Rolls-Royce are taking part in a study into corporate comms. The Business Leaders In Communications Study 2012, commissioned by recruitment company VMA Group, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the sector.
