MEDIA: CNN and Sportal team up for news

CNN is launching a sports website in partnership with specialist

interactive sports news provider Sportal.

The site, replaces the sports service, which currently

exists on Europe.

To date, CNN's only separate online sports brand has been, a

US venture in conjunction with Sports Illustrated, primarily focused on

US sports.

The deal between CNN and Sportal has taken more than a year to finalise

and means Sportal becomes's preferred provider of European

sports news.

'CNN is a familiar brand and this means we will have more relevant

sports news this side of the Pond,' said Europe editor Nick


Wrenn claims the site's key point of difference will be the ability to

combine coverage of both European and US sports.

'The aim is to provide a wide and varied service with the US site providing the best in US sports news, Sportal providing the

European coverage, principally football and Formula One, while also

using material from CNN's TV service.

The site plans to supply reports from the international sporting scene,

plus features and images. The site also contains background data.

Sportal already provides sports news across Europe via websites and

mobile phones. Wrenn said will only select the top

Sportal stories for its site.

Although the content will be provided by Sportal, CNN producer Simon

Hopper will oversee all content.
