Daniel Dodd joins the trust after a 24-year career at the BBC, where he held a number of senior roles including, most recently, global news sports editor.
The trust has been leading a campaign to oppose government planning reforms, fearing they will lead to urban sprawl.
Dodd said: ‘I’ve been a member of the trust for many years and believe passionately in the social value of access to nature and the countryside. These things are worth fighting for and I want to bring them to people of all ages and walks of life.’
During his time at the BBC, Dodd has been head of interactive for BBC nations and regions, and editor of BBC economics and business.
The trust’s director of brand and marketing Clare Mullin said: ‘Daniel brings a huge amount of media and digital knowledge to the National Trust, as well as excellent strategic management skills, at a time of important change and modernisation. His expertise will be an invaluable addition to the trust as it continues to grow and moves into a new era.’
Dodd will directly report to Mullin. He will implement activity across both digital and traditional media to increase awareness of the trust’s cause.
During his time at the BBC, Dodd led the editorial redevelopment of local websites and was closely involved with the BBC news website’s relaunch last year.
He also worked on the digital offer for the creative partnership with the British Museum, called ‘A History of the World in 100 Objects’.
