Karen Porter takes the role after a six-month secondment at the force from Woking Borough Council, during which time she has restructured the force's comms department.
Following a senior leader-ship review within the force, the restructure has seen Porter bring all of the force's comms people together under three teams - fast-time comms, planned comms and channel management.
Porter explained the reason for this restructure: 'We can move the work to where the gaps are. We were getting concerned that the reactive stuff would absorb people's time and not let us do proactive work.'
The comms team is now 26-strong, having been cut from 32 after the review.
Last month, Surrey Police launched an app enabling users to engage directly with their local neighbourhood policing teams. Other forthcoming proactive campaigns include one around antisocial behaviour during Halloween and Bonfire Night, as well as a burglary campaign.
A former special constable with Surrey Police, Porter said she would be focused on developing ways to 'deliver even greater transparency locally'.
She is responsible for overseeing the promotion of the force's work and achievements both internally and externally, through traditional media outlets and the use of social media.
Porter managed Woking's marketing and comms team for seven years. She joined the council as a press officer in 2002, and a year later was named CIPR Young Com- municator of the Year, before being promoted to marketing comms manager in 2004.
