International telecommunications firm Vodafone Airtouch has
confirmed that it is meeting with PR agencies as part of a review of its
UK consumer promotions, sparked by an internal reorganisation.
The firm already works with Craigie Taylor International, which handles
the firm's sports sponsorships, which include deals with Manchester
United and the England cricket team.
It is understood that any appointment that may arise out of the current
negotiations would focus exclusively on the consumer area. However, a
review of B2B public relations operations, currently handled in-house,
Vodafone senior communications manager Corrine Norris confirmed that the
company was at the 'initial stages of investigation', and that the
matter had not yet gone to pitch.
Of the move, Norris said: 'It's always sensible for companies to look at
how they perform and review that (PR)'. However, she admitted that talks
had taken place with a number of interested parties, adding that 'it may
be that we visit others too'.
It is understood that Countrywide Porter Novelli and Borkowski PR are
among those to have taken part in discussions, although neither were
willing to comment .
Vodafone generated extensive controversy when it launched a hostile
takeover bid for German mobile phone operator Mannesmann in November
