Gatherings of top decision-makers always alert the corporates. Tuesday's lunchtime fringe meeting, run by AS Biss and Co, saw ministers and businesspeople call for an increase in corporate social responsibility and 'cause-related marketing' techniques.

Kim Howells, the relevant DTI minister, told the meeting: 'Marrying social responsibility with standard marketing and communications adds to corporate reputation.' Sceptical left-wingers who worried an expansion of this trend would let the Government off the hook for funding services were given short shrift.
