New York rebirth and tourism: Key dates

On 12 September 2011 the National September 11 Memorial will open to the public on the site of the World Trade Centre. We look at some of the key dates in the run up to the opening and what happens next.

The memorial honours the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon. It also commemorates the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.

A year from now, in September 2012, the September 11 Memorial Museum will be opened. The museum will be located at the World Trade Center site  and will demonstrate the consequences of terrorism on individual lives as well as on a wider scale.
