Flack: (Saving) on expenses - Thali, London SW5

Reviewer: Howard Robinson, director, Quay West Communications

What is it good for?

Thali is a family-run north Indian restaurant that gives a modern twist to dishes that have been passed down through three generations over 50 years. As its name suggests - Thali means a selection of dishes - you can take an almost tapas approach to lunch.

Signature dish

Thali is very proud of the tandoori rabbit cooked with flamed rum, as well as the venison chops cooked in Indian spices and masala - but I always order palak chaat: crispy baby spinach, deep fried and dressed with sweetened yoghurt, coriander and tamarind. It is amazing.

Who's the boss?

Vikash Dhawan is the owner.

Tips please

Sit near the bar and ask them to make you a fresh tequila-based mojito. The lounge downstairs is a good space for private dining.

What's the damage?

There are plenty of options on the menu that will give you change from £20 for two courses and not go much beyond £25 for three courses.

Thali, 166 Old Brompton Road, London, SW5 0BA. 020 7373 2626.
