Jones, who joined Channel 4 in 2008 as head of public affairs, will report to Dan Brooke, Channel 4's director of marketing and comms.
The move comes only a month after the channel promoted Jane Fletcher to the role of controller of press and publicity from her role as head of press.
She will lead the corporate relations team and manage Channel 4's engagement with policy and regulatory affairs, and with external stakeholders including the Government, Parliament and Ofcom.
Jones will take a lead role during the forthcoming Communications Review and in championing Channel 4's effective delivery against its statutory remit to key stakeholders.
She is taking over the role from Nick Toon, who is leaving Channel 4 after six years to join Time Warner as vice-president, UK public policy.
Dan Brooke, Channel 4's director of marketing and communications, said: ‘Sophie knows all the layers of the onion and has shown her mettle over several years at Channel 4. She is a passionate believer in and persuasive advocate for Channel 4's values.’
Before joining Channel 4, Jones held various public affairs and corporate comms positions at ITV and ITN.
